2013 - Duvarita Syrah
Explosive aromas of violets, white pepper, olive tapenade and Old Bay seasoning greet you first. The palate follows, offering ripe notes of blackberries, cinnamon, vanilla and sandalwood. A silky smooth mid-palate seamlessly transitions to a pleasing grip on the finish. 98% Syrah, 2% Viognier. Fermented 100% whole cluster. Aged for 16 months in used French oak barrels. 96 cases produced.
You notice its aromas just as you are about to leave: sandalwood, lavender, wild berries and…is that a hint of hoisin? You decide to stay. After striking up conversation, you learn of its travels, education and adventures. Yet behind all of its worldliness there’s a vulnerability to this wine. The 2010 Syrah is both powerful and seamless. A complex mix of violets, black raspberry, flint, clove and espresso are perfectly integrated on the nose. Seductive flavors of wild cherry and maple smoked bacon give way to more savory hints of forest floor and hoisin. The finish strikes a perfect balance between rich and lean. Clean, fresh and intense. It has a good long finish, exhibits clearly delineated fruit aromas, showcasing an array of sweet, dark fruits. These aromatics are nicely complemented by an underpinning of exotic Indo-Eastern spices and smoky oak. The mouth is compact and powerful in its entry, turning more elegant and restrained through the mid-palate. Ample aeration begins to soften the youthful tannins building a beautiful texture.
